Barry, Cheers Mate, it seems something so simple can become mighty complicated. Moving forward i will just keep Raw files, make tiffs to play with and improve and do Jpegs when i have to. I do Raw, make a tiff then a jpeg and delete the tiff at the moment!!!
ps have a 500gb external drive for photos/vids and a 60gb portable drive for moving things about, memory so cheap now, got an 8gb pendrive for £17.99 used to cost a fortune. My really most treasured pics (family and stuff goes no DVD back-up as well). Good place for these at best prices i can find and very good service is

any nikon user use Picture project?
it transfers from cam into a new numbered folder each time. sod making new dated folders! how long must that take! save any edits from said folder back to it, then theyre all together. and u can tell it to upload directly to your external. easy peasy! wouldnt do it any other way. and i think it even works with canon raw too.
if carlsberg made a photo transfer storing system.. this would be it.

This software came with my first new D70, and yes I did like it to begin with, but now I have my own filing system that works well for me.

not once you have saved a jpeg or two that then appear on the "front cover" of each folder! and they can allways be renamed!
