Changing File type

Ok, so i got my nice new Nikon D40X, been concerned about what i should have as the main format, changed it from jpeg to RAW, but it's in .NEF? on my computer now i've uploaded the shots and i can't access them via PS. AARRRGGHH HELP ME PLEASE

I've got 2 options for RAW on the camera settings, anyone with a Nikon fancy assisting a damsel in distress X

Have you got Photoshop elements or CS2.

Otherwise download the DNG converter from Adobe here Adobe - Digital Negative (DNG) as this will covert your NEF file into a DNG file which is then readable via Photoshop.

Barry, Alistair, thank you very much. It's Photoshop Elements 5 that i have. I'll look at the links and hopefully it'll solve all.

Hi Lorraine, RAW is not a standard format like JPEG, .NEF is Nikon's own RAW format, I don't know what the other manufacturers use, so you need the correct plugin for the RAW converter, a software update might do it for you if you're lucky.
I don't know what you mean by 2 options for RAW, unless you mean RAW only or RAW + JPEG, if it is that then the camera simply produces 2 versions of the same picture.

To be honest I only use RAW under difficult lighting conditions, otherwise I always shoot in jpeg.

Think i'll be changing back to jped lol, it seems a lot easier LOL

Yes Merv, i was meaning the other option being RAW+JPEG

Yes jpeg is a lot easier and takes up less space, But RAW has it's advantages.
