For Tawny-Bev
Photographers Comments
Ok...today I had a commission to shoot 4 horses at a local show. I was due to be there about two hours but things, for once, went my way.
Bev asked about my dog and horse shots the other week (or at least I think she did)...well this is the reality of it.
I went to the show and did the shots. Unfortunately the owners are not allowing me to use the shots for forum use (they are nice too!), but they paid me up front so hey! who cares.
I just finished the job when I noticed a familiar van. It was one of my mates who shoots horses full time around the UK. He had a mitsubishi printer rigged up in the van for sub dye printing and a runner (his nephew) to collect the flash cards from his crew and return them to the van for instant prints. Anyway.....
After a really brief chat he asked me if i would shoot the jump off as the other guys were tied up with the dressage finals. Ok I said but you get what you get.
This is the reality of event shooting. Prints have to be done quick and look at least reasonable. No time for photoshop...maybe a quick levels/contrast and saturation ...then crop and print. Its all about money guys.
All the guys I shot were happy with the pics. This was a real rush job and a favor to a mate. I did 200 quid for the commission and another 70 quid cash in hand for 4 single jump shots. The extras were printed and the owners were very happy but unwilling to let me put them up on here (funny lot)...but one said yes!!!!
So here is your one pic!!!
Its not perfect but its real life guys. I pop the cam on multi shot and take two rapid fire shots per horse. My mate did the crop and post work in seconds, all I did was take the picture..this is how the punter got it...they paid for it and went away with a smile.
I wish I could have posted more. I have a ton from today. In a week ill ditch the lot. Such is equestrian shooting. No need to back anything up.

Hi TCO, nice shot, nice and sharp, Looks like the rider was struggling to stay in charge. A bit more work in PS to remove that background (telegraph pole etc.) and it would have been a cracking shot.

I know mate...but like I said, thats how it is in fast turnaround paid event work. There is simply no time to do any corrections. It has got to the stage now where the guy/gal gets of their mount and says...'where's the pic?'
Given more time i could have tidied and made it pop like a goodun...but thats not how it is when shooting events such as these mate. Very fast pace shooting and ultra fast results required.
Glad you like the pics bud.. (yours for £15 )

Nice shot, sounds like you had great fun.
Agree with Barry that a bit more work in PS is required to remove that background (telegraph pole etc.)
All the best
Paul

I am not asking for crits guys...with the best intent.
I could photoshop the hell out of this.
I am an equestrian shooter and have been for many years. This post was to illustrate how as event shooters we are limited by time and the need for instant prints. This is how it is. The image from pressing the shutter to the print being in the hands of the punter was under ten minutes. I should have made it clearer sorry guys. I KNOW IT CAN BE MADE BETTER BUT THATS NOT WHAT I AM TRYING TO GET ACROSS! said with huge smiles and lots of tog love dudes...Its to show the reality of the shot when doing event work...
Its not for fun bud...its for income, work...to pay bills whatever. This is what I do. If it is fun then thats a bonus. Personally I am sick of horses.

Thanks for posting this image, mate. I understand where you are coming from about the speedeness of getting the image etc - nice sharp focus and a cracking image - guess you get no second chances with this type of work?

Rather than a jump off against the clock, its more of a snap off against the clock then. Good job mate under testing circumstances.

hey dude, nice to see the good guys winning for a while!!
you really have to view this at the size you uploaded as the image in the thread looks over sharpened. funny how different sizes of the same shot appear different.
You know my opinion of your stuff so i'm not gonna add to the above comments
Right place, right time, right bloke. *clink* go the beer glasses

Notice this a lot with some images, when you look at the individual pic it looks less oversharpened. it crunches the picture up as well in the normal view. The horse seems to get taller in this one when opened up.
