EY UP Paul,
bit of a quandry this one!!! trying to cater for all tastes and experience, as you don't want to leave anyone out or alienate anyone also.

Have pondered this one for a few minutes and here are my initial thoughts....

Start off with 10 points (2 pts to post a pic)

no 1...2 pts for 3 good comments on the serious crit?

no 2...2 pts for 5 good comments on normal crit?

no 3...2 pts for 25 comments (inc chatty) on either crit?

no 4...2 pts per 50 views on any image (inc not posted for crit)?

No's 1/2 would be decided by the panel, and would only be awarded
once...?

No's 3/4 would be automatic and would be an on-going award...?

This way anyone can earn points but would be encouraged to strive for more by moving up the scale so to speak...?

This system could be refined obviously, but it was just my thoughts on a basic starting point...?

Regards Steve (Mello)

Hi

Providing critique can be a valuable part of the learning process and it would be incredible to see comments on every photo uploaded for critique.

I'm probably very guilty of uploading a load of photos and not asking for anything / replying so I think the proposal is a good idea for the forum.

Much of my free time / leisure time is not as devoted to the subject of photography as desired and I think it would be right for the proposal to commence.

That said, when I do have time to commit to the subject and peruse the forum, I do enjoy viewing the many great photos submitted by memebrs and have learned a lot in a short period of time, thanks.

Make the galleries sole purpose a repository for you to upload images for critique only.

Good idea.

Every existing member and every new member will receive 10 credit points. For each photo you upload, you will spend 2 credit points.

I appreciate the idea of the credits system but feel that a member should have the opportunity to provide content for gallery. Is there no room for a little maneouvrability on this?
I would suggest that a member can essentially upload a maximum of 15-20 photos but it could be stipulated that 10 of these would essentially be for critique.

For each critique, viewpoint and constructive comment left against someone else's photo you will receive 1 credit point. Providing 2 valid comments/feedback on photos will provide you with the ability to upload another image for critique.

Good idea.

I'm one of the shy ones at leaving comments as i'm very much a beginner and dont feel in any way qualified to offer critique as such. I'm happy to leave a positive remark if i particularly like an image. But on the other hand i'm uploading images to get feedback so it should be give and take. Look forward to some guidance if and when a new system is introduced.

I agree there should be some form of critique on people's submissions, and I know I should do a lot more, looking forward to what ever is going to happen.

My take.. well i emailed paul with my own concerns with the lack of comments being posted but the images still coming in! i am guilty of uploading a batch of images at a time and then slowly filtering them in for critique, as a matter of fact i have images waiting to be added and have been putting them in a bit at a time... not wanting to flood the forums!
critique shouldn't be scary... if your here then surely you want to learn? i am quite happy to either take crits from a beginner or someone more advanced .. you know sometimes we all get blank spells and look at an image and say " well i'm not sure about that picture" and a extra opinion is great! i don't have a little guy looking over my shoulder telling me whats good and bad...
so any way im all for it.. and i am sure the critique team will be gentle on the people just starting out!
i wish i had this when i started... i had to learn the hard way and still am!
ps running to the gallery to post pictures lol

if possible could you have a template with headings:
a)Composition (rule of thirds etc!!)
b)Quality (sharpness / DOF etc)
c)Exposure (too dark/light/spot on!)
d)Impact (what make the image attractive/stunning etc)
e)Constructive Feedback on a to d?
as a starter as this is what I look for when I view other people's images

Cheers Peter

I would like to post more comments but dont feel qualified or I am hesitant due to lack of experience and fear of making wong comments. I also feel I could be a bit boring if I just kept saying I like this image without actually being able to say why and what is contstructive or technical about it.

Similarly I post very little as I feel many of my images to be inferior to those posted, and there are many great images posted!! It's a bit daunting.

I appreciate you only get out of a site what you put in but I also find with such a busy life I often find I have very little time to go on the site.

As for the proposals I think they are very valid and a great idea. It just needs fine tuning so that people understand what is required of them and that ii is simple.

Trev

I posted on the "crits" thread last week, basically saying that I was nervous about posting crit's especially as I am not a professional photographer and I got a couple of really encouraging remarks from people but this one from Phil stuck in my mind
"You don't need to be a proffessional chef to know what food you like and why".....that one worked for me, while it's still difficult to put certain things into the right language I have started to just say what I see.....based on my eye and the knowledge I have learnt from places like this.
It's also true that many images I have really liked or wanted to comment on have not put up for crit, serious or otherwise.....what a pity because there are some stunning pic's in those categories.
One thing I try to do.....when I have time is to visit the "Unanswered Posts" section on the side bar and try to crit on a pic there that has been past by.......Perhaps points should be awarded for a visit there.
As for the point's system for posting and crit's, if it's to work it can't be too complicated (v blond here ) or at the same time make critising very sterile it would be a pity to lose the openness that makes this site a joy to visit.

In the word's of one of my favorite photographers...Helmut Newton

"Look, I'm not an intellectual - I just take pictures.”
