Thanks for your support Genese but when a dozen cops who have just come out of a scrape and are still waving their magic wands are standing angrily over and above you, the last thing you think of is to stand and insist on your rights. I think I was diplomatic at that time and baffled brawn with brains.

Hi Philippa,
images on your memory card are always available even when deleted. Certain programs are able to retrieve deleted files and pull them back to the forefront to be used again. The images in question here were deleted at the time to satisfy the request of the police (even though I knew they were in the wrong and were being over zealous). When I returned home I was able to quickly download a trial version of an image retireval program from the net and bring these images back out for printing and distribution.

Censorship is like a cancer. You try to treat it, but it seems to keep growing.

There are quite a few to choose from, there are the big boys like ontrack or trialware like Digital Photo Recovery Software - BadCopy Pro

No problem but there is one very important thing to remember. If a card goes bad or you have formated it by mistake, NEVER write any more photos or data to that card, hard disk etc.

When you quick format media, the device just clears out the part of the card that acts as a pointer to the files on the card with their file names, directory structure etc. which makes the media appear to be empty. This is known as the File Allocation Table aka FAT16, FAT32 and the more secure NTFS used in secure windows environments. Memory cards commonly use the FAT format as this is a standard across many devices for compatibility.

If you re-use the card you will overwrite the hidden data and no matter what program you use you are going to be in trouble.

Rule of thumb: If you need to recover images, never use the card again until you have already recovered the files.
