Smoking Model
Photographers Comments
After being on a look out for a model that smokes, I came across this girl. After about 10 shots I choose this one. It was original portrait, but I seem to prefer it landscape.

the technical side of the photo is perfect except for a little sharpening, but i don't like the smoke resting on her cheek, it's a bit off putting
just my tuppance worth, i'm only a beginner remember

I agree with Dave. Its a good shot overall, but the swirl of smoke over your model's face spoils her look.

Yes I agree.......I think she is well suited, and lovely skin tones to.
Not as keen on the chopped off head, nore the crop on the hand.
I believe it would have looked better with a less tighter crop,
But still a good effort and one worth working on.
Cheers,

I think this could have been a really good shot opportunity. I find the white clothing very frittery and too bright. Had she been wearing black with the smoke blowing away from her hand (with more space the other side) the smoke would have been more of a feature as a good juxtaposition to the pretty girl. Would have looked better in B+W I think. Nice try though.
Have a look at Herman leonard's site under 'music'. Quite a few smoking shots of musicians.

Yes, I like the B&W idea...there is not enough depth between the smoke and the skin...at first I thought that it was some skin cream that had gone awry

Was this for a certain project, given that you had to have a model tat smokes?
I agree with above, I find the smoke on her cheek distracting. I really like the use of landscape though.

You have had some serious 'tech' crits on this one. So I am just going to look it as an image, a subject, a moment.
If I had not known you had taken it then to date the pic would not be easy. This could easily have been an off the cuff Bailey image from the the 60's/70's crossover period. It does not look staged or like you have asked her to pose...for me this is a good thing. It looks like you have just leaned over her and snapped. She could have been a movie/rock star just chilling after a session., thats how it hits me.
As an image of this type its a big thumbs up from me. Timeless. Natural looking. Pleasing to the eye.

I must add that I don't find the smoke on her cheek distracting. after all that was supposed to hve been the original idea.
In fact I would have liked to have seen the smoke twirling as it went up.
Cheers

i too dont find the smoke distracting, however smoking is not an attractive thing to see anyway..not a subject i would find appealing but then artistic interpretation is open to all and beauty is in the eye of the beholder..image a touch flat for me too but the colours work well and as Teeseeoh states, it could take you back a few decades
