I took some candid shots of friends kids and Mum said that they would love to help me get a portfolio etc, so I think with this dennis the menice look a like & his big sister, we are going to have great fun learning....

Hi Pete, Sorry mate but to me this is all wrong you need to remove the clutter from the back ground come down to his level unless you wanted the camera to dominate your sebject and maybe a smidge more light in the left eye (our right as we look at him.. Its sharp and vibrant though but for a portfolio I think its wrong. It does just look like a quick family snap..
Hope you see what I mean and feel my crit is fair...

There is an appealing atmosphere to this shot but I would agree with Nik re taking a bit more care and notice re the background. I like the warmth of colour between his clothing and skin. I don't have too much of a problem with the slightly higher perspective as it suits his expression on this occasion.

Thanks both, Nik you miss read it, this IS a family snap shot, thier mum has said that I can borrow them to take some portfolio shots, I just thought that this captured the potential that I saw....

Hi Pete, nice idea to put a portfolio together, but this image as it stands would not do you justice. As Nik has already said always look at the background and keep it very simple so that your eyes do not move away from the main subject. As for the kid, you have caught this just right, I like the drops of water on face where he has just got his hair wet, and you have got his eyes sharp.
