My Grandma in the 1940s.
Obviously not one that I took, but I really like it. Any ideas on improving it for framing would be much appreciated.

I presume that this is a scan from a original print, if so is this the file that you will use to re-print. Hopefully when you scanned this image you saved it as a tiff file and not a jpeg, because this image will require a bit of tidying up before printing (as there are white marks on her left cheek and left side of her hair, you may even be able to tone down her right cheek and forehead) and as this will require opening up the file again and saving again some image quality will be lost using the jpeg format.

hi Julia...I'm of no help in this area...at all!......but just wanted to come in and say that as soon as I saw this image from the thumbnail, I loved it and, certainly see why it is special to you. This would be my mother's era.

Hi Julia
A lot of repair work on these types of images are all to do with patience. Lots of small areas of clone and heal brushes, and try to avoid closing the image and saving to file too many times as this decreases quality on each occasion. (especially if you are working in JPEG file). As suggested earlier a TIFF file would be more apropriate. Here I have worked from your file just to show an example. This was cleaned up with clone and heal brushes, working on very small areas at a time. I then altered saturation, blended in the highlighted areas of the hairline with the burn tool, adjusted brightness and contrast and altered curves. Added a little sharpness to the finished result. I am sure you will be able to achieve a better result when working on a high res. copy.
Regards....Phil

Hi Julia I wouldn't have been able to offer much help on this one as I have never really used a scanner for one....I think there is hope for all old shots like this as Phils redone version is excellent IMO.
Like as been said the trick with these I think is a lot of patience.

Hi Julia, what a lovely pic of your Grandma.... another suggestion is to convert the image to greyscale as well. Looking at your image I think you scanned it in RGB which is good, but after scanning I have found that you get better results when printing if it's a greyscale image....you will also lose the pink tinge. Just another idea into the mix, I'm not an expert.....but like to play and learn.
By the way,good work Phil!
