Default Matt rehearsing

Photographers Comments
This is a friend of mine at band rehearsal, unfortunately, I think I have made the hair around the back of his head look too soft.

I really like these studio shots
Can you share what you did? Camera settings, mono conversion?
Looks like any softness, such as in the hair, is due to movement as the mic is pin sharp

Hi Lel, his microphone is very sharp but his head and hands are showing signs of motion blur. There is no exif so i cant see what settings the camera was on. Low light is always difficult you need have a high enough shutter speed to freeze the action but cope with the dark. Not my forte either really, but a bit of motion blur aint the end of the world.

Right, it was my first attempt in low light, had to take it down to 1/20 and whack the iso right up to 1600 so it has made everything very grainy and he did keep moving as it was a proper rehearsal.
I tweaked the brightness a little in raw and then in photoshop I converted to mono and cloned a few things off of the wall.

You did very well to get this shot at 1/20 sec, upping the ISO was the right thing to do as a slightly grainy sharp image is so much better than a blurred image. Your only other option would had been to use flash which is not always possible.

I did use the flash on some of them, but they were far too bright and lost any kind of atmosphere as I only have the on camera flash at the moment- thanks for the well done- I must have had steady hands that day!

when shooting atmospheric shots, art overrides technical aspects of a shot for me....the blur just adds to this in my opinion...been ages since i shot bands, this brings it all flooding back...BW works well for me here, if anything i would have poss graduated the RHS into darkness and make him really stand out..nice work, good to see back Lel!

I agree that on camera flash will just kill any atmosphere.

As a regular taker of this type of photograph with an 'average' camera; I find that you have to focus on the mic; stand still like a fool until the 'moment' and 'hope' the singer is 'in focus too'.
I try to get shots with the singer away from the mic; to get their full face in; but it's fraught with the same problems.

A really good photo though - what music do they play?

Oh....I've took some very 'atmospheric' shots using flash - at some venues its the only option. Every one is generally happy as long as it's not 'flash' all night.
