We've had a few photos like this Andy.
For me,.....I find them a bit too contrasty for my tast, as I can still
remember the beautiful B&W photos from the film days.
The heel to toe, looks like it's been pushed to the limit,
with this image.
Remember the better B&W films had a range of 16 stops,
and could have probably handled this shot a little better.
I think that the duffuse glo has probably caused some of it?
Quote...(back left both honeycombs,) I understand the 2 lights from
the right, but fail to understand this part. Does that make 4 lights?
By the look of the photo No.

And no, I'm not running you photo down, just giving my view.
I'm fully aware of your skill.
But interestingly I would love to hear your comments.
Please do.

Cheers,
Joseph

P.S. Oh! and one more thing Andy, I'm not so sure that I'm happy
with the tilt on the head......sorry.

Joseph

Hi Joseph

first off, i thank you for being honest, your experience is something alot of people would aspire to have...me included

I do miss BW film, got the bronica out last week, shot some polaroid but no film as yet

typo on my description..there is only 1 light not two (doh!) i was going for a slightly dated feel, somewhere 40's/50's filmstar approach...not sure if i pulled it off!

The Diffuse glo is a bit harsh hence blown highlights, the orig file has full detail in the skin
cheers for your comments, food for thought....makes me think before touching the keyboard ! lol

I like this one, mate, love the shadows from the neckless etc and down the left had side - gives it a Rembrant sort of look - I am in no way a portrait tog, but I feel the right hand side of the face a little to over exposed - just below the eye and the right cheek - Maybe a little burning on cheek edges for definition might work - but as said not a portrait tog and do like the image.

Hope you not mind me saying this, mate??? :S

Thank you for your reply Andy.
And some interesting comments to, may I add.

Liked this one..... i was going for a slightly dated feel, somewhere 40's/50's filmstar approach...not sure
if i pulled it off.

Good thing to try tho. Nice to see that you have a polaroid, they can still be good fun at times.

Oh! would like to say something to Mark as well.(Spooks) if I may.
Rembrandt was famous for his low key paintings, and rightly so.
I think that they were superb.
Low key is better suited for men, in my opinion, and I think that he
did well to choose them eg: monks and the like.
But above all he was most famous for the lighting named after him,
"Rembrandt Lighting" projecting a triangle of light onto the broad side of the face with it's charactoristic nose shadow running onto the lip.
We can all copy good stuff tho, there's now copyright on doing that.

Cheers,
Joseph

P.S. Oh! bye the way Andy....I'll post some more of my Portraits soon.
You're more than welcome to speak your mind to.

Joseph
