Close, but banyans roots grow down from branches and generally much larger. There is a banyan on another island which covers 10 acres!

Well done Else,
The original was a picture of a tip of the root. I I ever get to do this again, I will try to make it something more easily recognisable, although I did think one of NZ friends might get it. They are very similar to the cabbage tree from there.
