I'm guessing this has something to do with Topography. This is an accurate study of the land surface, which includes distance, formation sea level ect. So i assume it is a very early portable topography instrument.

LOL Andy. Now days you may see a couple of idiots in yellow jackets on the side of the road or at new building/construction sites. One with a gadget which looks like a huge camera on a yellow tri-pod and the second with a large pole he stands upright at a distance away. This is checking the lay of the land and is a form of topography.

Well Phil is very close indeed! Even tho I have never heard of Topography myself....(better look it up)
And Nik is quite warm as well.
Remember this was been taken from a photographic journal, and is an aid to photography. Well thats what I thought at least........ But after Phil's comment I'm scratching my head..?
Maybe we'll all have a talk on it later.
Please remember also, at this time, that wages were only 10 shillings a week as well.
I think that you will have it by the second try.
Thanks for trying

I think it is a range finder. To find the distance to the subject. Mind you, at 2 1/2 pounds I don't think I would be bush walking with it.
Cheers Rex

Spot on Rex............The part that made me laugh though........was it's a one man range finder.
Wish that I had a prize for you!
Good for you Rex,
