Can I create HDR with my digital compact and photoshop? Or do I definately need different software?

Yes you can create HDR with your compact and Photoshop - CS2+ I think though.

All you need to do, using Photoshop, is load in your jpeg image, adjust the exposure by a couple of stops (for example: 0 to -2), then save the file under a different name. Repeat the process, but this time change exposure from 0 to +2, again save file under different name.

You now should have three files with different exposure settings. Start HDR plug-in in photoshop and import your three files. Experiment with the different settings until you get a result you like.
