Photographers Comments
This tulip won third place at a local photo competition. How could I make it a better photo, any ideas welcome

Hi Karen lovely shot nice sharp image with good colour and exposure. The thing that lets this down a little for me is the DOF the tulip below left and behind right needed to 1, not be there or 2, more out of focus.

The DOF needed to be much tighter on this, my attention would have then been more focused on the main tulip. If you had of moved your camera to the left and up just a little you could have hidden the tulip behind your main subject and possibly fraimed out the one below. Also try not to always frame your main subject dead centre use the rule of thirds from time to time it can make an image even more appealing.

With a much narrower DOF the distractions from behind would also have been less obvious. I dont know if you use a compact or a SLR. A tip to try to get a narrower DOF is to move away from your subject and zoom in on it this might help works best with SLR zoom lenses but might work on a decent compact also.

All in all a very nice picture well worthy of a prize very nice well done

Unfortunately the only answer to all of Niks comments Karen would entail a reshoot of the subject which i guess is not possible? His comments on the composition e.t.c. are spot on. I have tried a crop and cloned out the corner of the lower tulip then blurred the one behind the main subject. This has moved the main subject slightly off centre. and then slightly sharpened the main flower. Dont know if its any better Nik??

without going through the hassle of a reshoot you could selectively blur the background and poss brightening it a tad too to emphasise the main subject. Great shot and very well taken. nice crop and the colours in the BG look good too
PS. if you ever shoot anything like this again, maybe take a friend along with some coloured card and place behind the flower/stem. dont use flash as this could create shadows..
