i simply decided this picture would work better if focused on a particular part of the flower rather than the whole thing

You are definately thinking more colin, however dont know what time you took this but on my monitor it looks likea lot of the detail got blown out. maybe a reflector to stop the light or a coat or something right side as you took it might have helped preserve the white bits better. Keep going though mate.......
