Lyme Regis Harbour, Dorset
Photographers Comments
Lyme Regis on the Dorset coast is just about my fav sea-side town that’s within day-trip distance. Sitting in a beach side bar enjoying the view of the small harbour and a retreating heavy bank of rain cloud when suddenly the sun popped out from behind a cloud giving not only some nice light but a completely unexpected rainbow. "Oooo, look at!" that I said and promptly abandoned the current Mr f18 mid slurp to nip out and grab this shot. I’m always amazed just how often we are presented with a good togging opportunity seemingly at random. Always carry a camera.
Mrs f18 hit on the bar tender in my absence ….. she’s a devil that way. Nice looking young chap though, if I were that way inclined ……

Hi Dave,
I really like this shot and believe that it could be subject to a copious amount of HDR treatments. Here's a quick one I did earlier, however a lot more could be done.

Great capture. The reflections are really nice, and the scene is beautifully lit. Was the image cropped to a panoramic format, or is it a photomerge?

Phil, I can see were you are coming from. Hmmmm, it’s a bit harsh on this low-res jpeg but the parent file is RAW so I might just have a go. I can see the colours that emerge from the buildings and the ‘darkening the dark bits and lightening the light bits’ of the sky has real potential …… Cheers. What HDR software do you use as I was just thinking of buying some. I’ve just used the fairly poor CS2 feature and the trial version of Photomatix so far

Cropped Paul. I was standing at the water’s edge and all the boats were on the far side so there was a large expanse of water I the foreground

I use Photomatix but you have to be realistic with the effects you apply and try to keep it natural. Bet this looks lovely full size.

I think the beauty of HDR, whether photomatix or otherwise is that it allows the author a totally free range of effects. This can either be a natural look or totally bizzare. I believe that this image could handle both ends of the scale with equally stunning results.

Hi Dave,
I use Photomatix Pro, which, although it did take a while to start getting used to all of the knobs and buttons, I feel is an excellent programe for HDR work
