Hi Paul, I see that you are going for filling the frame with your birds, I have found when entering this type of image into competitions, judges always seem to knock off points for filling the frame. Maybe I have been entering the wrong images though. But getting back to your image the colors of the bird stand out well against the background, but I would get clone out that light colored bone in background as my eye keeps going back to it.

Starlings are an amazing bird and I am so glad someone has shot one. They have so much detail and colour but you hardly ever get to see it.

Here though you get some idea of how detailed these birds are. Its very slightly soft/blurred Paul as you already know. I am glad you are keeping at it because if you are getting this close the detail will be superb when you nail it buddy.
The only other thing which spoils it is the big white item in the background.

Nice image and I can't wait to see your progress when shooting our feathered friends/fiends!

Cheers bud!
