Philippa your swan is nicely framed but it is well out of focus.

My thoughts as well,...composed beautifully but the very soft focus has let this image down. The satin look of the background water, pulls one in to have a look

I agree with donkey boy. I think its more motion blur than out of focus.
I would have liked to have seen exposure upped a little bit to make the whites white. You have the detail there which is a good thing. Unusual crop and a very pleasing one. rIGHT....I'M GONNA BE INFLUENCED BY THIS ONE...ALL I HAVE TO DO IS FIND A POXY SWAN!! .

nICE IMGE. wELL DONE.

i dont know if anyone else is having problems connecting to the site but its taken forever to get back here this evening.

Norman, Fay, Andy(aka donkey boy??),Tco, thanks very much for the feedback. shot at 1/60s, so not sure, either unsteady hand or motion blur. perhaps opening aperture more i could have got a faster speed and got it a bit sharper. i'm afraid i got so wrapped up in processing this shot, i missed the obvious - talk about not seeing the wood for the trees - oh well, next time.

Tco, swans are both nosey, and posers - these were a long way off and made their way over to me to have a look so its well worth looking out for them.

i appreciate all your input and thanks to it i shall be more aware of what i'm doing next time - glad you like it.

hi Philippa, Nicely composed .. and love the look of the water ... wanted to ask u if you thought about using a tripod .. I know they are extra bits to carry around but think this swan would have been absolutely beautiful. Thanks for sharing ..
Cheers
Else

hi Else, i was using a tripod taking castle shots until this pair of swans turned up. however in order to get a good view of them i had to perch, precariously, on a couple of narrow stone steps that led down to the water - there just wasn't room. also they were moving, albeit pretty slowly, so unless they remained motionless the tripod would've been no good with the 1/60s exosure. i would have got a faster shutter if i'd thought to push the iso setting - hopefully i will be more mindful next time i get a shot at them.
glad you like it and thanks for your interest, much appreciated.
