thank you all for your kind comments.
For the spyder lovers, i am also using a spyder mkII but with coloreyes software to calibrate. I have learned that even calibrated monitors can look different due to the luminance settings. James taught me a bit about it and i realised that my monitor was always set too brightly until recently. I have set mine to 140cd^2 luminance. therefore, I may be seeing differently to others.
Im glad this has been brought up because it was the main reason i gave up groups, and nearly photography ( thanks again to james who kept my sulking in check). When critiquing, to make a harsh comment on brightness may be wrong, the person who created the image could be scratching his head wondering how his photo turned out differently to how he sees it. It can cause confusion, and even, in beginners eyes, can make them lose interest in participating in groups. Maybe paul should put this down somewhere as a guideline of when making critiques.
It doesnt worry me as i know that my photo will look the same on another machine, if i should buy one, but it is something people should think about before saying about brightness etc.
Sorry to waffle on but it is something that i have noticed more since talkig to james at length about.

Thanks fay, yes the mac is becoming a lot more popular, My cousin ( james on this group) bought a mac, i loved the look and feel of it, and the much easier operation and interaction, so i bought an imac intel 24" which, after a slight problem with the screen, is totally awesome. As a result of my purchase, no less than 5 friends have followed suit and made the switch. Apparently a lot of people are switching after seeing friends machines or getting fed up with windows and what i call messy OS.
I cant wait to get a macbook pro next !

Hi Ric,
I admire your new approach, I need to do the same sort of thing I think, think that's why I'm messing about with this B&W stuff, I'd be interested to know how you are going to set about it...
I got my Mac at the beginning of the year, no looking back, 20"iMac 2.4 duo intel with 2GB RAM, how bright is the iMac colour profile? LOL.
Good luck with it all mate, glad to see you back in the forum too.
Fay I'm not stalking you honest

Merv, thanks. Darkening photos to make more punchier images can be done numerous ways as you know. I am experimenting with textures behind images as well at the moment. I found the brightness too much, about 250cd^2 at minimum which was still too bright. Coloreyes, expensive software but utilises several calibrators and it brings my display down by attacking the graphic card directly, great. yep arnet macs wonderful, my (7 year old)daughter is using my hi powered pc for kids web games now which seems a little strange when watching her, she wants a mac now too !
Using blending modes to darken photos, especially the multiply blend mode is used heavily. If yo want any more info on what i am up to send us a pm and i will provide my email.

Thanks TCO, not all my photos are like this, and the ones i am working on now, would probably not be appreciated by most here but i will get some more done soon.
Andy, LOL, i remember being amused by the mac V pc debates that i used to see all the time. I really dont care what ppl use, a long as they are using it and having fun ! thank you for the comment, I dont rate myself in photography terms at all, and am only now starting to play with more in photoshop but am enjoying it, dare say you will see some rubbish coming from me too, thanks for that though, appreciated.
