I would have also lie to have see a little more space at the top so the wing is cut off.
It really is a shame you didn't get the focus on the bird, that would have really helped this photo. Photographing birds isn't my main interest but I was out shooting today and tried to capture some ducks taking off from a lake and I know how difficult it is to focus quickly on these animals as there is no chance to ask them to stop and pose

Birds are really starting to frustrate me, this looks like a lot of mine. Looking at the EXIF data, I guess you are shooting wide open at the long end of a 70-300 zoom? Never ideal for sharpness, you could bump the ISO a little and stop down to about f/8, but then you might introduce a bit of noise which needs smoothing over, again robbing sharpness.
I can think of one solution, nick Paul's camera while his back is turned lol.
Keep plugging away, can't wait to see the one you nail
p.s. just saw the lens in your sig, I'll never be Sherlock Holmes will I lol.

Good capture. Beside the out of focus problem, I would prefer to see more space ot the top and crop a little bit more on the left.
