Not very far away, maybe 2 meters... the bird is actually a captive bred bird on one of the Photo Days that we run out in the New Forest. If you look at where the leg runs under the wing you will just see the very edge of the leather anklets just by the wing edge... only a tiny sliver is visible. The rest of the jesses are behind the wing and on the other side of the tree root.

Tawny ... he's actually a male. Difficult to tell differences, especially at this angle, though females are larger, and sometimes have more spots on the front chest/belly area. Having said that I have seen females with no front markings, and males with a lot of spots!
