hi trevor
you are great at getting close to these birds!
the wire behind him is a little distracting! other than that you have a good depth of field and like you say a lighter crop would work well!
what a beautiful male chaffinch

Crop some from the lfet side and bottom for a more dynamic composition, then use the clone tool or heal brush to lose the wire if you have photoshop or similar.

If you truly (do you?)want serious criticism - this image is unredeemable: you are working in a field (wildlife) which is heavily populated with brilliantly animated, really cute, anthropomorphic, aesthetically, documentarily or otherwise exciting or macro stuff - look at the mags and their online galleries for existing standards! Offered in a constructive spirit and 'cos you asked. A.

Steady on Anthony.
You can offer constructive criticism in a more tactful way.
Saying:-
Quote:
|
this image is unredeemable
|
is hardly helpful.
While offering the advice of looking at good photo's elsewhere gives us something to aim for, it will rarely help with technique or technical difficulties.
Try suggesting something Trevor could have done differently, such as:-
Personally I would have waited for the bird to move away from the wire, for example.

Anthony I strongly suggest you post any more comments to our members in a friendlier manner. You have come across as brash, rude and condescending. Typing, 'offered in a constructive spirit' and words alike at the end does not excuse your social behaiviour to long time members of this friendly and helpful forum. This is what sets us apart from the rest.
If you are unable to conduct your forum posts in a friendlier manner then I, for one, would rather you never posted at all. It is possible to offer serious crits without being rude. Also may I suggest that you introduce yourself in the introductions forum before coming out ' criticism guns a-blazing' and maybe people will cut you a little more slack. Well intended but serious advice.
Trev mate, maybe a slightly lower viewpoint in addition to your suggestion of a closer crop would help. Maybe a brightening in P/shop too mate to do this splendid little chap some justice regarding the colour of his feathers. Shoot plenty more buddy and i'm sure you'll nail it.

Yep I'm a newcomer but no way a pro. I obviously made a mistake in taking seriously the request:"Serious Critique Required: The photographer has requested he/she would like a more serious level of critique for this image" - silly me. Nice to hear from Trev. Personally, I deplore cliques on photo galleries (not here especially) who seriouly mislead learners into thinking they are much better than they are. With all due respect, there is nothing whatever "rude" in what I wrote and I stand by it. It IS constructive. Best wishes, Anthony.

Thanks Tco, I agree with you, from Anthony's comments on other peoples photo's I personally will not view his photo's. The one in question was one of my very first tries at bird photography.
