Manifold valley
Here's an old pic of the manifold valley that I like - taken with a box standard 50mm lens - feedback would be good - I'm sure there are 'arty' aspects that I should consider now I'm wanting to get a bit more serious about it all

I think your image would benefit from a crop to cut out the sky that is not doing anything for your picture. In fact you could almost cut the image in half and make a nice letterbox style image.

Thx Ogofmole, I tend to agree. Anything I can do with software to correct poor technique......its an old 35mm, scanned by a poor scanner about 8 (?) yrs ago and I'd like to improve its quality somehow (as well as the cropping) but don't know where to start?

The first thing to do after scanning is to save it as a .tiff file and not a .jpeg, otherwise everytime you adjust and save the picture the quality will go down. But as a .tiff you will not lose any quality. All my images are saved as .tiff and only converted to .jpeg just before printing or uploading to the web.
As for improving the quality, the first thing I would do is crop the image down to the size that you want. And depending upon what software you have many play with the colour channels, and possibly a bit of sharpening around the edges of the trees, without effecting the sky as this needs to stay soft.

thanks.....i'll have a 'play'. Such a lot to learn! I have photoshop cs2, but know that even less than my new camera at this stage.
With a digital camera, can I tell it to save as .tiff rather than jpeg?

Other Pic
I like your subject and what you were trying to do, but I do find that the background is just a little too bright and it keeps taking my eye towards it. But otherwise I do like the shot.

Try to use CS2, yes it can be rather daunting at times, but remember that we as photographers only use a small section of this vast program, so there is in fact only a small bit of it to learn, it is well worth getting a book on CS2 if you have not got one already. Some cameras will record in .tiff. But I set my camera to record the image as a .jpeg in camera, then once it is downloaded onto the computer and I like the image, I will adjust as necessary and then save it as a .tiff.
