Hi Lorraine,
just a small amount of fill in flash would add catchlights to the eyes and eliminate those intruding shadows. If you are not too confident with how much to add I am sure that the D40X exposure meter would give a good reading and allow the right amount for you.

I really like how you've captured the droplets of water on the swan, nicely focused head and neck shot.. Josie

Haha Lorraine, everybody is here to learn and you will from Phil's advice.
Fill flash is used to drop some light into the shadows and dark areas in a photo. Sometimes you may notice the flash indicator in the viewfinder blinking, this indicates the camera thinks you should use the flash as it has detected big contrast.
To use it is pretty difficult, press the flash button, done lol. As long as you haven't changed anything in your menu the flash meter will work without input from you, so just fire away.
I can't tell from the EXIF data what mode you were shooting in, your shutter speed was 1/500s, your flash only works at 1/200s and slower, the good news is that the camera will take care of this automatically aswell, just check for overexposure on your first shot by using the highlight review screen and/or the histogram screen.
