Default The wind-beaten dunes

Photographers Comments
Shot today in in the sand dunes at the back of my local beach. I was attracted by the weird wind-beaten shape of the tree/bush. It wasnt too hot in colour, but looks much better in BW. Taken with a £70 lens (Canon 50mm 1.8)

Very nice Rob .. and amazing isn't it how even large trees will grow the way the wind shapes them ... Looks like it was ready to storm ..
Cheers

Like this one - do you have a standard procedure for creating aggressive skies ?

Yes. If you have a sky that is not too blown-out in the highlights (this is a perfect one) then you have a good basis. See the original RAW below, as it came from the camera. I edit in the RAW editor and really push the contrast. Without blow-outs you can get away with it. Then, in Photoshop, I converted this to B&W using Power Retouce B&W Studio. Photoshop plugins for professional photo retouching. This allows you to push the tonal ranges much better than with other methods such as base Photoshop. You can also do it on selected parts of an image, or set your own tonal range limits and then adjust them for wherever they occur in the shot. In this shot I also dodged and burnt parts of the sky, as the harsh contrasting gives a more angry look. I suppose what I mean is, you need a fairly bland (but good quality) image to start with.

Angry young(?) man.

A very dramatic looking shot, I love it. I also have a nifty fifty, they are great lenses.

Carole
I thought mine had packed in yesterday just after I took this. It wouldn't autofocus (common problem evidently), so I got the wife to shout at it. Fine now.

Thanks Dave. The lens does produce incredibly sharp images, and going down to f/1.8 you can get some very creative effects. Here's another I took yesterday with the same lens. This one was at f/2.2.
