I'm sorry Mary I have no idea what he is. What I do know is that he's beautifully captured. He's super sharp with fantastic detail particularly those wings. The leaf in front is a little distracting but I suppose that couldn't be helped. Well done

Hi Mary,
Re your insect, it looks remarkably similar to the Crane Fly Tipula paludosa (Tipulidae) that we have over here. The adults are harmless but the grubs, called Leatherjackets, eat the roots of grasses and can cause large yellow patches on lawns. They can become a real pest. Great photo by the way!

Aha- I did look this one up and it is indeed a Crane fly. I do spray for them but this fellow obviously survived. I agree the leaf in the front is distracting but sure didn't know what to do about it. Maybe aperture from f/10 to F/16?
