A try at doing a back lit shot/ any suggestions would be welcome.

Hi Mary great macro shot, hairs on main body look sharp but wings and legs look to be going a tad soft, I guess that you used a large aperture like 2.8 or 3.5, the background is perfect. As for your lighting I like the effect, only niggle for me is that you have burnt the top of his rear body, but you have managed to retain detail in the front of him, which could have been difficult with the lighting only coming from the back.

But it is still a good image, if you had spent too much time trying to set up the shot he would have flown away.

Nice shot Mary, f13 barry according to the exif 1/160 shutter speed. barry has pointed all the obvious things already.

I was miles off on the Aperture, Why didn't I click on the Exif Info button.

Thanks for the comments. I agree on your assesments. This was a hand held shot and I was trying to get a good back lit one but am not quite sure how to do this effectively as the foregrounds seem to end up really dark. These insects are probably not the best practice subjects as they arre not still for very long. Am also trying out back button focusing which I just discovered on the camera which may help on the focusing challenges. Not sure I am using that right either but will work on that. Mary
