Default Street in Old Riga

Photographers Comments
Does the B&W conversion work on this shot of one of the many cobbled streets in Old Riga?

I think the B&W conversion has worked well Maureen, and your composition is excellent. Unfortunately for me the blown out highlights in the sky and building at the top of the image makes my eyes wonder in that direction. Also the blown out part on the right is also drawing my eyes away too, sorry.

I'd also have liked to see a little more detail in the shadows too to bring out more detail.

It really can be hard to expose for a scene like this with a lot of white but otherwise a great composition. Experiement with your metering modes a little more to get the exposure especially when all the whites will confuse the censor in matrix mode. You can also try auto bracketing as a safety measure to help get the right exposure.

Thanks for looking Paul. No need to apologise I know that the blown out areas can be distracting. I appreciate your constructive criticism and advice on metering which I'm still trying to get to grips with. I feel very encouraged by your comments on the composition. I'm enjoying using my dslr and experimenting and comments such as yours and others I've received on here help a great deal in the learning process

Hello Maureen!

Very nice shot what you have done here. I like the spirit of these narrow streets, there are a lot in my city, Budapest, as well.
In my mind this is not exactly a b&w photo rather monochromatic. I dont know the process that you used but this effect gives the shot a plus dimension. Congrat for this job and thanks for sharing with us.

All the best
cleano
