Experimenting with Welding Glass

Default Experimenting with Welding Glass

Oks I just spent a small fortune on some welding glass - grand total £0.81p!

Its not a very bright day here today - spitting with rain, but had to give it a go - result was a very green cast image, so will need to get the white balance right.

Also, I was able to fit it into my filter holder, but I kept getting a reflection of my lens from the glass, so need to get it closer to the lens.

Forecast snow here tomorrow, but Friday supposed to be sunny, and am also guessing that this system needs to be used in bright light.

The glass itself is virtually black - no idea on the ND equivelant.

Will continue having a play, and hopefully post some images soon.

For those who have already tried this process - any suggestions/pointers you can post here??

Cheers for now, and TIA

MARK...

Hi Mark

I just had a go but Im getting 5mins plus exposure and its a bit pointless as its grey and only in our back yard, best on a nice bright day with cloud movements, least you know how to set the custom WB so its not been a total waste of time Oh yes dont forget to set WB back afterward or youll end up with total mess shots LOL

Hehehehehe - I forgotted numerous times - deleted images straight away!!!!

Have been researching on tinterweb, and you do really need a good days light - still gotta sort this green cast out though... LOL

It not going to beat me - after seeing images others have posted on the tinterweb - this got great potential at minimal cost!!!!

<mental note>RESET WB</mental not>

Grrrr - wish there was a way to put a check list on here - so many things learned from this post already! LOL

Ok - am guessing this lot, but here goes.....

Use something like f5.6 or thereabouts - put camera in manual mode - take a photo on auto WB, then, set WB from previous photo and retake the shot.

Do you take a reading then set the exposure time or guess it and see what happens?

Sorry for hasseling you, but am willing to learn, and not done a lot of this type of photography.... LOL

I meant to pick up a welding glass today at work, oh well it will have to wait until the new year, you should be able to give me some tips by then.

I will have a look out, but can't say that I know of any places around here that sell them.
