Default Concert Photography

Hey guys and gals...I'm going to a Lily Allen concert at The Oasis in Swindon on Sunday and am hoping to be allowed to take my camera in (already had the hubby sending emails to find out if cameras are allowed) and I was just wandering, whats the best way to capture good shots of an artist on stage where alot of movement is involved, and where there'll be alot of lights moving about etc...plus this is a standing concert so will I be allowed to set up my tripod or will I have to do it all hand held do you think?? What sort of settings will be best to use for this kinda shot?? Any help will be great. Cheers guys xxx

Never done gig photography Lou, however what annoys me is most gigs say no photography and they let people in with 8mp cameras on their phones. Or a slim point and shoot is allowed as well as they can be concealed easily, if they do let you in a tripod at a standing gig with other people about i would say is a complete non-starter/ Imagine the crowd surging, someone trips over the leg of the tripod and everyone follows and your camera is at the bottom of the pile. Elf and safety will stop that one at a guess, hand held unless you can get there early and real near the front you will need a decent zoom and high ISO setting but be prepared for noise dependant on your camera perormance. I can do around ISO 2000 before mine gets noisy some cameras its ISO800 you will need this to get a decent shutter speed in the dark conditions. Be prepared to spot meter the subject as the camera will compensate for the dark conditions and your images will be under-exposed.

Maybe RM will add to what i have said, but my guess is a large gig like Lily Allen will be a tough one!

I would not have thought you would be allowed a tripod, the few concerts that I have been too, I managed to just walk in with my camera in a bag, I'm no expert at type of thing, but found that I got quite a few good shots with the lens wide open f2.8 - f5.6 depending on your lens, and using a high ISO like 1000 to get a reasonable shutter speed like 1/30th sec. Hopefully Alan will let us into his secrets.

Rather than waiting until the night, try some at home in one of the rooms with only a small amount of light at different ISO settings, but remember that a slightly noisy sharp image is better than a blurred noise free image.
