The word photography derives from the ancient Grreek meaning 'painting with light'.
Thus, this therfore by it's own admission must constitute a degree of art by being able and capable of painting with light. I have taken many images which would fall into the catagory of 'snapshot' photography, but by using the tools of the trade at your disposal and your skill as a photographer, I feel there should be no discrimination between art and photography. Indeed, a disciplin within photography itself is called 'fine art' and should be recognised as such. In my opinion, when administered correctly, Photography IS art. And remember, art itself is only a matter of opinion.

I totally agree. For me, the picture is only the start of the end image. I spend far more time creating "art" from my images than I do actually taking the photos. One good trip out with the camera can give me enough raw material to keep me going for some months. Hence, I do not take as many "straight photos" as I was taking a couple of years ago. I don't think it's possible to separate photography and art.

I'm a 'quantity over quality' photographer! Working on the theory that at least 1/100 must be good!

Most forms of photography can be considered as art.
After all the creation of a piece of art involves pre-visualization of the finished product.I am always using light to create the image in my minds eye. I remember when shhoting film I would always have an idea of what was needed in the darkroom to get the finished print I was after, now with digital a technically correct picture in camera can be manipulated to give very artistic results wich can look toataly different to the origonal. Even with a compact camera the user has total influence on composition and using the light for effect. |
