Selling photos / redbubble
Hi all
I notice that one or two members have their images on redbubble, and at least one has sold something Can anyone recommend this as a way of selling images? I guess it all depends on how popular the site is with the paying public. I can't be bothered to upload my portfolio to YET another site if there's little chance of selling anything.
Any other sites you recommend for selling landscapes, etc?

Hi Andy, i agree i went to all the trouble of registering with them, setting up an account e.t.c. THEN i looked round the site, its more artistic i find than photographically biased (my opinion obviously). Mausue sold through here however she is very good at still lifes, i havent seen a lot of landscapes on there.
Anyone else help Andy here?

I've looked at Clikpic but they don't actually sell prints, they just provide you with a website. If you want to sell prints or whatever, you have to do all that yourself!
In the US is Smugmug which appears to be a complete service, but being in the US, I don't suppose it's that practical for someone un the UK who wants to buy.

I'm on redbubble and as yet I haven't sold anything either....However it's up to you in how you approach it......You have to build a watch list and then people will start watching you, you have to be an active commenter and you should submit your best work. It's important to bear in mind the number of people on there too...thousands!! LOL. According to them they have shipped 73,500 items of art to 71 different countries in the last 12 months.
Realistically you are a small fish in a HUGE pond....it's not about quality of work or thinking you're good enough (I've seen sone real c..p sell), so you won't make a fortune!
I enjoy it because of the people I know and those I have met through it....it's a good testing ground for your work although you won't get good crits like you do here! Infact if you find me there you'll see work that I have never posted here.
There are groups covering many different types of photography and art and yes there are landscape ones!
One thing I know for sure is that you won't get rich there LOL...

My biggest concern with it, is that you have to sell X amount to get a payment, so a few sales will not get you anything.
I see redbubble winning big here, as they will receive the full amount and only give you your cut when it's big enough.
For this reason I will probably remove my work from there and maybe have another go when it's a little better.

I have sold a few things through Red Bubble so far (cards, posters and mounted prints). I really only intended to use Red Bubble as a temporary outlet until i set up a new site for my work.
I can actually produce the work myself at a lower cost (for mounted/framed prints at least), and prefer to work that way, but the benefit with Red Bubble for me was that overseas buyers could purchase larger items without the huge shipping costs. When my old site was up (which i will be doing on my new site too), i offered a hand printed service, which would allow my customers to purchase mounted and framed (if required) prints from a limited edition run. I found that 'personal' touch appealed to my customers, and i could tailor my work to suit their needs (within reason!!!!).
So there are benefits to Red Bubble, and it costs nothing to set up, so even if it only gives your work a wee bit of advertising, its worthwhile popping a sample of your work up there and posting a link to somewhere that the customer could contact you direct.

Hmm, I don't intend to join Redbubble to be part of yet another community, I am already an active member on many photography forums, more than I have the time for! What I am interested in is whether redbubble will bring sales from the casual browser, not someone who is already a member and decides to watch me, they are not the sort of person who is likely to place an order, are they? After all, they more than likely produce their own work.
Obviously I see the advantages of a site like this, they do most of the work for you, and the chances are you'll receive more 'hits' from that site than you would from one you set up yourself, because it's already an established presence. Perhaps Paul has the right idea, just think of it as free advertising, and do your own site as well.
Thanks for the replies.

Andy, imho You must go Global. It no longer matters where You live, the US,UK or Outer Mongolia.
First, I am not a Member of Red Bubble, but have also seen Members mention their success there, though I have never actually seen anyone report any real "financial success/fame" through that Site.
I would take note of what cyclone says :

is that you have to sell X amount to get a payment
|
With that sort of Policy, I would be deterred.
To get "real money" from Your Works, I believe "Limited Edition" is the way to go ... however the Photography and the Printing MUST be exceptional.
I see the downside to places like Red Bubble being ... *anyone can post & sell there* ... this will not reflect that this is a "quality site for a purchaser*
I am assuming that the Site will make much of it's revenue from "postcards" which is not to be sniffed at if You are the Site Owner.
(the Tate Gallery sells more Postcards than any other form of art work ... it is their highest earner) ... further revenue from Advertising.
Like I say ... the Site is probably earning ... but, I seriously doubt that anyone else is.
ttfn ... Tedz

Just for info about RB payments...this is how it works, (taken from their site).
"RedBubble will transfer your earnings on or before the 7th day of each month for your previous month’s sales by either direct bank / PayPal transfer or by posting a cheque – depending on which payment option you choose. Bank / PayPal transfer will be paid out when you have accrued at least 20 USD (or equvalent in GBP/ Euro/ AUD) and cheques will be sent to you once you have earned at least 100 USD (or equivalent in GBP/ Euro/ AUD) – currency depends on your settings. Your earnings will continue to roll over each month until they reach these minimum values.
If you would like to be paid straight away, for a 5 USD fee we will send you a cheque or make a direct bank transfer on demand."
I personally don't have a problem with that and believe it to be fair....then again I haven't sold anything yet lol..
