Hi,

can anyone offer me some guidance on whichflash would be a good buy(reasonably priced) for a Canon EOS450D - possibly also want to shoot some macro.

Hi Graham, dont have a Canon, however i do know if you want to do Macro you need either off camera capability or a dedicated ring flash which diffuses the light when close up. My flash works wirelessly and i set it up on a gorillapod to light the subject away from the camera. Perhaps some of the other Canon guys can help.

Both the 480 and 580 ex units a good mate. Having said that I have 2 metz-54 mz 4i's. When they work they are brilliant but they are complicated to use sometimes, not like the good old metz from yesteryear. How much did you want to spend?
