Fuji File Extnesions?
I have started to try to get to grips with RAW and am slighty confused as my S9600 says it shoots in RAW 18Mb, when i select it in the menu it says RAW, when i shoot it says RAW in the viewfinder.....but when i upload them all to my PC they save in .RAF ????
Any idea why this might be
many thanks for looking

Just the file extension, mine is Sony and they are .ARW files! Raw is a generic term literally meaning raw unprocessed data. WB, sharpening e.t.c are NOT applied in camera and have no effect on the image. The files are bigger because they retain all the detail discarded when processed to JPEG. The major advantage of raw is flexibility to process, the major disadvantage is you have to process to get an image you are hapy with. Nikon are .NEF files! Hope this helps

RAW is a sort of global term, it is NOT a file format.
Each manufacturer has it's own way of collecting RAW data and it's own formats for sorting it out.
Fuji use .RAF as you have found, Nikon use .NEF, I don't know what Canon, Sony or anybody else use, but they will all be different, one reason some people prefer JPEG's and TIFF's which are more likely to receive continued support from software developers such as Adobe in the future.

Or you can convert them to dng files and then they will work in most image processing applications and are more flexible! (post script to Cyclone!)

Yep I should have mentioned DNG, think you need a DNG converter for that, not 100% up on that myself...

wow thanks for the fast replies, i understand now about the generic term, its just annoying as my windows wont show the thumbnails properly so i have found PS browse works ok, next thing is I have started to shoot in RAW and so far have been very disappointed, the images regardless of settings are grainy/noisy at even the slightest level of zoom, am i doing something wrong or is it the camera?
regards
