Old digger in Infrared
Photographers Comments
Spotted this old digger on a track around the Elan Valley in Mid Wales. Shot using Dedicated IR camera, then in processing I did not swap channels which would have given it a blue sky, but I just increased the saturation on the digger itself and then sharpened image.

gosh, clever and very effective. i take it there's no snow here, all the white is down to IR?? or both, snow and IR?? the digger looks like it could topple, propped up on that bit of bank.
nice one Barry, i really like it.

No snow, the white is the effect of IR photography of any foliage. As for the digger yes it was parked on a steep bank and looked as if it could topple over.

Like this …… very unusual, certainly a change from the subjects usually seen in IR images. Generally works very well for me and the toning of the digger adds an ever more surreal feel than with straight IR. Composition is spot on for me.
One small thing which does strike me (but in no way detracts from the image as-is) ….. I see a lighter tone patch around the joint in the middle of the arm and around the tail of the engine compartment (spots of sunlight perhaps?). The rest of the digger body is fairly evenly illuminated and slightly duller than these two patches. I like this look of different areas different levels of illumination. Would a little dodging on a couple of areas (front of the cab & side surface of the arm top joint perhaps) add a bit more variation in the tone range of the digger?
This would make a great subject for high contrast B&W as well.
Just my $0.02
Good image, Dave

Hi Dave, thanks for your comments, I think those slightly brighter areas is where the paint seemed to be in better condition, But now after you have pointed it out I will go back and do a little dodging. This is one of the advantages of posting images for Critique, other people see different things that we how took them missed.

Really like this Barry, like all your IR actually. This digger has seen some life, even an old engineer like me couldnt fix that one. Didnt notice the bright bits myself either until i read the other comments. Different subject, makes a change.

Actually although it looks quite rough, I'm sure that it is still being used.
