Hi Hannah .. I am also a newbie but .. bought a G7 in 2006 and took it on a holiday with me and took about 9000 photos with it .. and was really pleased with it. They have a new point and shoot out the G9 and it has shooting in RAW capabilities. Most photographers will tell you go and try it out, hold it to see if you like how it sits in your hand .. etc. .. More and far better photographers .. that have far more knowledge then I do .. will be around .. later ... Looking forward to seeing your photos ...
Cheers
Else

Hi Hannah, you know the EOS 1Ds MkIII is on that list, wish I could have one for £300 lol.
Seriously, Else is right, it's good to hold the camera first and make sure it's comfy, I was lucky as I got to have a go with my Grandad's D80 before I got mine. If you're worried about the hard sell, just don't take your money with you to begin with
Do you need a compact camera? The reason I ask is that any DSLR performs well, even the cheapest ones, there are loads of great photo's on here taken with Nikon D40's and Canon Rebel's and they have auto modes to use until you get more confident.

Hi Hannah, there are also some good secondhand cameras out there. As Else said the Canon G7 or G9 has auto point and shoot plus plenty on manual settings.

Hey Hannah!! I just went through the list you provided.Seeing the number of sellers available with checkcost,it seems you are gonna save a lot of money..Anyways,out of the list i would recommend you to go for the Canon G9.Also if you are not keen on buying a compact camera,I would suggest you to go for a dslr since it would be helpful for long term use.Have a look at them..But the thing is you'll have to increase your budget a bit. This list has the cameras that you can get within your budget but then you have to buy the lenses..but trust be its worth the investment..

i started digitally with a old D60 dslr you can get older digital bodies quite cheaply from sites like
One of the UK's Best Stocked Dealers, Part Exchange Welcome, Collection Service Available and the london camera exchange or even ebay.. may be worth your while if you are likley to upgrade in the future ?
