Wow, this is what happens if you don't get to the internet for a week!? Thanks for the replies and advice, took me by surprise - a good surprise, though. Especially thanks to Barry for advising I handle them first - it didn't occur to me that a camera that looks good on paper might not be right for me when I actually get around to holding it. (This sort of daftness on my part is why I am trying really hard to rein myself in and not launch headfirst into it, which is my usual style.) Also Rob: sound advice all round, especially where budgeting is concerned. :-)

Hi,
If it helps (I'm no expert tho), I bought my first DSLR last September when I started my course and it hasn't let me down yet.
I read up quite a bit about it and from what I can gather, you'll never get everything from one camera, so the advice on trying out a few and seeing what feels comfortable is bang on.
Personally, I've always been a Nikon fancier and got a D80, which is supposed to be aimed at the amateur professional. If you're looking to get serious about it, I can recommend it and it's probably worth the little extra than the D40.
Enjoy
Nat

Hi Bec
I bought the Nikon D40+ 18-55 mm lens just recently as my first DSLR I'm finding it good and easy to use, I have now bought a Tamron 7-300 mm lens and this is proving to be a good buy.
I have found that there is a restriction in lenses dur to needing a motorised lens but there seems to be more out there now.
I'm only a beginner like yourself so would also listen to these guys on here, I didn't find this site till after I bought my DSLR.

Hi Bec- did you make your purchase? I'm in the same boat but trying to decide on the D60 or the new Canon 450. Be interested to know what you decided on and why.

Hiya! Yep, in the end last Saturday I got my first DSLR! In the end I went with the D40 - I tried out a few of both Canon and Nikon in the shop (the London Camera Exchange - they were very helpful in there, thank you Andy for recommending them!) and as a beginner, I found it good to use and handle. 6.1 megapixels is more than enough for me as a beginner, and also the price was a factor too.
Also, on buying the Nikon, they are doing a Spring deal at the minute - cuz I bought it with the 18-55m lens kit, I sent off and they'll (hopefully!) give me a £30 cashback because of this deal. They are doing it on a few different lenses - the bigger the lens, the more the cashback. Should this info go somewhere else in the site, because I didn't know about it until I actually went to buy the camera.

Great news you got your first DSLR!
Cashback deals are pretty common with cameras, so most people probably already know.
