Default Shiny new kit!

Hi guys,
I am just starting out and I am looking to upgrade my standard kit lens for my Canon 400D. My main interests are Landscape and Portrait. Would I be better buying a 50mm lens and a second len or go for something that is all in like a canon 17-110mm? I want to be able to take my photography to the next level but not on a huge budget. Probably looking at around 3-4 hundred. Does anyone have any recommendations?
Thanks
