IS needed or not
Hi.
AS i am an easy target when buying new gear, (took two months to choose first dslr body 400 D with basic 18-55 lens)
would love to hear your oppinion of the new 55-250 is lens but am unsure if i realy need the is. or would i be better getting second hand lens with a wider apature? in the distant future i would also like a 10-20 for landscapes. but think that a telephoto would be the one i need first
thanks Kevin

Hi Kevin,
It really depends on what your shooting, i started with an 18mm-70mm then got a 70mm-300mm then 50mm prime, then a 10mm-20mm (which i love by the way) then the big one 80mm-400mm OS.
I have recently sold the 50mm and the 70mm-300mm (which i really miss for the weight and size for the zoom you get),and bought a 18mm-200mm which is great to leave on the camera.
Much of the time i find it's not the case of do i need it? it's more of a case of do i want it? i usually last about a week cave in and get one then bang in the overtime later...
My next one will be a 24mm-70mm 2.8 which i want as i am trying to get into shooting models.
well enough of me spouting hope this helps (maybe just a bit???)...
Regards Steve.

Hi Steve.
Think you have confirmed my worst fears, looks like it is going to be a long and expensive road.
very helpful to see the order in which you built up.
I expect that i will be folowing a similar route.
thanks for the trouble
Kevin
Ps. think i want more than need the canon 55-250 is.
could tell her it was new tyres for the car!

i would go with the 75mm-300mm rather than the 55-250mm ..
the 10-20mm is an ok lens but lacks contrast and needs in my opinion quite a bit of raw processing.. if buying this lens you may want to get a polarizer to boost contrast.. i would recommend a polarizer anyway for use for landscapes etc... i use mine lots!
i started with a 24-70 .. well a 24-105 but i lost it while on a cliff..
a 80-200mm
75-300mm
then bought my 17-40mm
and my 100mm macro
i only tend to carry the 24-70mm the 100mm .. 75-300 and the 17-40 around with me that way i always have something to photograph and the right lens for the purpose
never bought a IS lens as i tend to shoot using my tripod...

thanks Genese.
i think my main concern was as tecnology advances i didnt want to shell out too much on an out of date lens. but i can see that it would help me compose my shots more with a tripod, though the canon 55-250mm IS has got good reviews. was just trying to get my head round the best options, have only got the kit lens at the moment. hense all the sun flair spots. but it will do for the moment.
will have a look around and see what price they are,
do you think that second hand is a good idea?
but ebay seems to be about the same price as new price anyway.

seems to me you need to shell out for the polarizer then to stop the sunflare ... if you are thinking of buying second hand... which i have done on a few occasions then try matthew at One of the UK's Best Stocked Dealers, Part Exchange Welcome, Collection Service Available or London Camera Exchange, Search Results.
i have bought second hand from both of these shops in the past and they check all their equipment before selling it on!
and are willing to barter!
ebay is worth watching at times... i picked my 100mm macro up from ebay for £250 from a fella who had no idea what he was doing with it.. it was basically brand new and he left the polarizer on hehe
