I would go for another Lens, problem with 2x converter is that you will lose 2 full stops of light and unless you are using a f2.8 lens then you will probably find that the lens will be to slow and even AF may not work.

What would you advise being the next zoom for D40.

I've got 18-55 and 55-200

I want to use it for nature/wildlife

Len

To be honest I use my 70-210 f2.8 for wildlife, although I do have on order a Nikon 300mm f4 lens. So maybe a faster lens would be more beneficial so that you can still get a sharp image in lower lighting conditions.

Hi Len,
what wildlife do you want to do?
Birds need the longest lenses, 600mm is very popular for that.
The problem is that once you get past 300mm the price just goes crazy and I still find bird photo's very difficult at 300mm.
I think half of the result comes from patience and getting close though.
