Default sony dsc h9 a question about lenses

just recently bought my first dslr camera a sony dsc h9 which has a 15x optical zoom along with 3x smart digital zoom with a carl zeiss 35 mm lens. this is mainly to take wildlife and landscape photos. i have looked on ebay and can order wide angled lenses of 74 mm and 0.45x or 0.75x and i am wondering which would be the best for my particular interests. also i am looking at 2.0x and a 1.75x tele lens thinking the 2.0x would be the better. any feedback would be appreciated. my photoshop experience is sort of below basic so would prefer to get it right at the first attempt but i am trying

Hi Mel,

The first thing you should realize is that you haven’t got a dslr, but you have got a good high spec camera that will do the job you need of it and give you great images. A dslr has lenses that are removable and there by interchangeable, what you have with the DSC H9 is a camera that lenses can be added on top of the existing lens. Here is a list of the lens (and other) accessories that you can get.

Talking in 35mm terms, your camera has a range of focal lengths from 31mm to 465mm. 31mm is fine for landscapes and 465mm is well good for wild life, these are lens zooms not digital so you should loose no quality at long focal lengths. ISO goes up to 3200 and shutter speed to 1/4000 sec, once again great for your uses.

Included in the pack is a remote control, which I guess will act as a cable release, so for landscape pictures that is wonderful.

Ok as to what you should do lens wise is nothing! What you should do is by a decent tripod, one that is tall enough for you without the use of any centre column, which just turns it into a monopod, which are useless for landscape. Fire the release using the remote to reduce camera movement. This will be the best and most productive investment you can make.

Down the road after a few months, the max 465mm focal length will still be fine for wild life but you may find yourself wanting to go wider than 31mm so invest in the wide angle converter.

Hope this helps, if you have any other questions, please just ask, we have a wide, varied and vast knowledge pool here.

Alistair
