Hi Claire, Well you have quite a few options depending upon available money. The first option would be another compact camera with manual exposure controls as well as point and shot, the next option would be a bridge camera which is cross between a compact and SLR camera or you go for a Digital SLR camera.

I dont really know too much about Sony, Minolta digital cameras but any Canon or Nikon around £300 would get you some serious kit..these days the technology from the pro cameras filters done very easily to the amateur market and you get lots for your money..
Warehouse Express - Camera Accessories and Lenses, Photography Equipment, Canon, Nikon Digital Cameras
Jessops
Digital cameras, digital camera reviews and best price search
follow these links, whatever you choose, try to find it in a shop and play with it. remember that a camera shop should have employees that have good knowledge whereas currys, argos etc will have good prices but not always expert knowledge. research until you are blue in the face..post any q's on here, we are always happy to help
good luck!!

Claire
Depends what you want to do with your photography
The camera you have is a 'point and shoot' camera, and is fine for general snaps etc. But you are unlikely (but not impossible) to take really good shots consistently with it.
Next step up is a 'bridge' camera, so called because it bridges the gap between point & shoot and proper SLR cameras. Bridge cameras are fine and have a lot of the features of SLRs, EXCEPT you can't change lenses. They can suffer from poor lens quality (which you will eventually notice as you get better). Prices vary, but I bought a Fuji 9500 (now 9600) for abot £280.
Last stage is SLR, where you can change lenses and have much more control over settings, add filters, and do all sorts of stuff that you can't with the others. There are plenty of price options, but the Canon 400D is a very good starter. The 450D is the latest, but its more expensixe because it's new, and isn't really a big improvement. Have a look at this site Warehouse Express,
Cameras & Lenses - Cameras - Digital SLR - Warehouse Express
they are pretty cheap. The 400D is about £400 with a basic lens, and you can buy better lenses later and interchange them. Nikon are good too. If you buy a new camera, you might want to go to an experienced camera shop first and ask advice and you can feel and try the cameras. You can always buy elsewhere. With SLR it's mostly about the lens, not so much the camera.

In which case, you will probably be better off going for a Nikon or Canon as you will get a wider choice of aftermarket lens such as Sigma or Tamron also a good choice of secondhand lens. Try to handle both cameras in shop and go for whatever fits your hands and feels right, good luck and let us all know what you have gone for.

Hi, unless things have changed, I believe that you can now upload images after you have made 5 posts which you have. So have a go. Just go to your gallery which you can get to from the gray box on the opposite side of your name above this post, then click on 'upload photo'.
