Hi Claire,
I was in your boat about 9 months ago. So I bought a canon 400D wich is a good camera but I bought it without looking at the market. I only had it a few weeks and realised it was no good for me. With the anger of her indoors hahah I then purchased the Canon 40D, with camera is brill, in short look at the market for what you can afford then look some more. DSLR is the way forward, but the way you take it forward is up to you and your imagination.....Derek

I know i should get a DSLR at some stage but I am really happy with my Fuji S9600 £182 from Amazon. I am stil getting to grips with most of its features as I have stepped up from a Fuji F610Zoom. All the photos on my site have been taken with a combination of the two.

You do not need a top of the range DSLR camera to produce good images, I have had some excellent results from my Canon G7 compact camera which have been printed at A3 size with no problems. It is more important to know where to point the camera and when to press that shutter button. But the advantage of a DSLR is that you do have more easy control over exposure, plus the main advantage is that you can swap lens.
