filters

hi all,am off to egypt in may for couple of weeks and dont have any filters of any kind at moment but from reading posts they are a useful addition. i have an olympus e410 and a couple of lenses.looking to get maybe uv/polarised type.what do you think?

I would get both of these, the uv filter will protect the front of the lens when there is a lot of sand dust about, and the the Polariser filter for nice blue skys and fluffy clouds plus it works well with reflections in water.

EY UP Mate,
you will probably get some really bright skies so i would be tempted to get some grey ND Grads,and a graduated tobbacco might work well with all the yellow/orange sandy type tones your bound to encounter.

PS: i would get uv's/skylight's on all your lenses and leave them on,it's a damn site cheaper to replace them than it is a scratched element......

Some people will agree with you on this one while others will say that a extra piece of glass will degrade image quality unless you are buying top quality filters.

EY UP Barry,
yeh i see what your saying,but have stuck Hoya Pro 1D
filters on and i can't say it makes that much difference apart from darkening the sky a little...

the best filters to start of with are the neutral density grads (NDS ) the polarizing filter (i use the cokin polarizer as it slots into my cokin filter holder and can be used with most of my lenses) it retails around £59.00
if you are shooting in RAW then you can change the scene by changing the white balance during processing!

HI George whereabouts in Eygpt are you going. I went to Sharm El Sheik last year. If you are not going diving yourself go on the glass bottomed boat its absolutely amazing.All the sides at the bottom are made of glass, its like being in a tropical fish tank and the coral is just awesome.A polarizing filter will help if do go on it. I'll download some of my photos so you can see what I mean.
