SB800 Flash unit question
I got a question for you and I hope you guys with Nikons can help.
I have a mate with a Nikon D70s camera and an SB 800 flash unit.
Can the flash be used off the camera either by a wire some how or remote control like infa-red or some such ?
Thanks guys.

???
I know it will work like that on your D80 but I don't think the D70 works with it off camera unless you use some other equipment to sync them. I do hope someone else will give a better answer.

Hi Jill, You can't be many miles from me, but anyway back to your question.
The SB800 will work wireless with the D70 (so it should work with the D70s as well). You need to set the camera flash to commander mode from within the camera menu, then on the SB800 set the unit to 'Remote' the channel to 3 and group A. when the camera is set to commander the onboard flash will fire but only to set the exposure and has very little effect on your image, but if you do not want any on-board flash effect then cover the flash with a bit of exposed 35mm film so that only the infrared light will pass to fire the remote flash. Let me know how you get on.

No I am not THAT far from you either.
I was up your way at lady falls not so long back.
That is only 30 miles away from me.

hi Jill, as Barry said, the commanding setting in the camera can set off the 800, but, i feel, an off camera flas is required when you do not want light directly at the shot, this is where i'd personally use a Nikon SC-29 cord. this connects to the hotshoe like the flash would then to the flash, giving lots of movability.. and i think jessops do their own cheaper version.
but id like to see results from Barrys 35mm "diffuse" idea
