d40 or 400d
I am finally about to buy my first dslr. I was interested in the Canon 400d but went to Currys yesterday to have a play with a few others to see how they felt for me. I liked the Nikon d40 and the Canon 400d. Now I'm confuddled and don't know which one to buy. Any help?

You're on dodgy ground with this one lol.
Almost everybody will recommend the camera they have to you, I wouldn't be without my Nikon but I'm sure I'd say the same thing if I had gone Canon.
It's up to you, which has the features you need or prefer? At the end of the day you'll be the one holding it, maybe try to imagine which would feel better at the end of a long day shooting.
I'm sure whichever you choose, you will be happy with.

Maureen, I am a Nikon fan and had a D40x, the only thing to consider is are you going to want a selection of lenses ?... If so you are limited with the d40's to lenses with built in motors, where as the rest of the Nikon range & the canon's will take most used lenses & budget manufactures lenses...

Hi Maureen, this is a big dicission to make for your first DSLR, as Merv has already said people who use Canon will recommend Canon while the ones who use Nikon will recommend Nikon, so you need to choose whichever feels right in your hands and price. I have included two reviews of both cameras that you are interested in, this should confuse you even more .
Nikon - Nikon D40 - SLRgear.com!
Canon - Canon EOS 400D Digital Rebel XTi - SLRgear.com!

At the end of the day it is what feels best in your hands, the nikon D40/x is smaller, the Canon has a bigger range of lenses etc that may suit you, Image quality is probably very similiar.
I dont envy you deciding Maureen.
Have you tried eeny meeny miney mo LOL.
Either one you wont be dissapointed, I'm sure.

The Nikon D40 is a little fussy on lenses, ie autofocus will only function with the newer AFS lenses and not older lenses, or with some third party (ie Sigma) lenses, where as any Canon eos fit lens will work on the 400D.
Canon 400D gives you 10 megapix, Nikon D40 is only 6 million...
Of the two cameras you mention, I personally would go with the Canon... LOL ... and I use both Nikon and Canon gear!

I still use my D70 which is only 6 megapixel and it produces clear sharp A3 size images.

Thanks for the advice guys it's much appreciated. I held both and both felt right hence my confused state. Think I'm edging towards the Canon because of the choice of lenses. Every time I say that I think but.....and then end up confused all over again LOL
