Default Canon 30D - Error 99 - any advice?

Hi all

I was shooting a wedding last Saturday when one of my cameras, my Canon 30D, packed up! It started displaying Error99, took a few more shots sporadically and now won't take a single shot.
I've seen a few tips on forums about things to try like powering it off for a while, cleaning contacts, trying different lenses, but to no avail. It would appear that a failed shutter is a possible cause, so I checked out this theory by trying a 'sensor clean' and the mirror opens up but the shutter does not. To me that's a fairly good sign of a failed shutter, or something closely related.

What do you think? Any more tips? Repair job? Anyone know the likely cost?

Cheers

Andy.

Seems odd that the error came and went away.
With the cleaning thing it deffo points to the shutter. But I don't think it's physically broken, as it worked a bit and stopped again I think it may be an electrical contact somewhere that's gone dirty/corroded/loose.

I have spoken to my local camera repair centre and they say it's possible to overhaul the shutter, it's their first port of call usually. That's only £70 which is a nice surprise. They say if it needs a new shutter then that's extra, but I don't suppose the part can be much more, I would have thought it's mostly labour.

As for the shutter limit, I've only taken 10,000 photos since I've had it, although it was a reconditioned unit so I have no idea of the true figure.

Norfolk camera centre are reasonably priced and can give you an estimate over the phone if you described what you have listed here.

What was the outcome of the err99 then Andy, the link i posted has been great for me, the shutter problems tend to be motor drive related from what he tells me.

Just interested.

Hi Del
The problem was with the shutter.
I got a new shutter, AF mechanism and overall service from Colchester Camera Repair. That cost £140+vat which I thought was fairly reasonable considering I'd previously been quoted £70 to overhaul the shutter. At least now I know I have at least 50,000 (or is it 100,000) actuations life left in it.

Andy.

Sounds reasonable for all that work, glad you got it sorted.
