Default Circle Flash around Lens??

I've seen a lot of good photographers in videos use a circular flash that goes around the lens to take portrait photography, specially of the face.

i've seen some results and they look nice without shadows

Does anyone know what that's called?
where i can find it?
do they have one for an a700?
what its best used for?

i see alot of ones that say macro online, are those the ones im looking for for portrait photography?

if anyone knows anything about this flash please comment, thanks

Its called a ringflash.
They vary in price but a good one is not cheap (around £700-£1100). You can buy ringflsh adapters for your flashgun as a substitute. They are designed for even shadowless light as you said.
They do smaller ones for macro at around a few hundred, a cheaper option.

Does anyone know how long the 'ringflash adapters' for speedlights have been about? I came up with the idea of making one about 18 months ago and then a few months later, I saw the first one I'd ever seen actually on the market. Now it seems there are loads of them. It bugs me to think that I invented something and someone else beat me to it!

Andy.

Did you not see the one at focus?

TBH I thought i looked pretty ridiculous, especially in the sample photo on the stand where the model had sunglasses on lol.

I saw a guy carrying one and it looked massive, as I would have expected. However ridiculous it might be, if there's a market for it at £200 a pop, I wish that I had patented my idea

I meant the picture really, although both looked pretty silly.

I can see it'd be useful for macro, but it's use in portrait photography baffles me.
The guy at focus was producing very flat, albeit very close up portraits. As you'd expect the catchlights were donut shaped and just looked odd to me. The advert shot on his display had other lighting I think, but I couldn't really get past the donut reflection in the sunglasses.

While typing this I've been reading some web stuff on these things and it seems I'm totally wrong lol, used in high end portrait stuff apparently...

I think this is the one I saw being used link

But this one is a lot cheaper link

Yes, in fashion and beauty shots I think it's desirable to get a circular catchlight all the way around the eye rather than a single rectangular one.

Lots of people making their own DIY ringflashes!
