3 weeks ago my wife brought me a Nikon Coolpix P6000 for my Birthday as my current Kodak compact had started to play up after years of abuse.
I didn't really get much chance to play around with this until last week. I wasn't happy with the focusing and sharpness of the pictures, and sometimes I couldn't manually select some of the aperture f stops. I went onto Nikon web site to download the instructions as this model doesn't come with printed instructions! To obtain a copy of the printable PDF file you have to register your camera. So I entered all the details and when I clicked on register it kept coming up with the message " The Product Name & Serial Number are invalid" I rang Nikon up and explained the situation, they ask me to send them a Photo of the base plate of my camera with the product name and the serial number visible so they could investigate further. So I took a few shots and sent them off. This was the reply I got back. ***************************************** P6000 serial number issue Reference # *********** Recently you requested personal assistance from our on-line support centre. Below is a summary of your request and our response. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nikon Europe Support 23/09/2009 | 05:07 PM Dear Paul, Thank you for your patience while we were researching the issue you have reported. Unfortunately we have to inform you that the labels on the bottom of your camera, particularly the bottom one, are not genuine, and the serial number printed on them is indeed invalid. Please see the attached image of a genuine P6000 camera labels and note the following: 1. The shape and the wording on the bottom label. 2. The quality of the print. 3. The way the serial number is printed. 4. The fact that a genuine P6000 serial number is 8 digits long. Unfortunately there is very little we can do about this other than to advise you to take it back to the dealer whom you have purchased it from and demand a full refund on the basis that the product sold is not genuine altogether, or was sourced via unofficial (if not illegal) sources and re-labelled in amateur way. If you wanted to further check some details with us you could: 1. Send us a sample image from your P6000 camera. 2. Send us further images showing the rest of the camera body at different angle. 3. Provide us with a list of the contents of the box that the camera came in (included accessories, documentation, etc.). We sincerely regret this unfortunate turnout and remain hopeful you will be able to satisfactorily claim a refund from the retailer. For future purchases we recommend that you use one of our authorised dealers in your area, or one of the recommended online dealers which you can find via the links below: Title: Dealer Finder Nikon UK - Where to buy ? Title: Recommended Online Dealers Nikon UK - Community - E-Dealers - Online Dealers If you have any further queries regarding this matter, please click the link above to update your question. Kind Regards, Stanislaw Noman Nikon Europe Support Nikon Europe . ************************************************* I'm still in shock as this camera was purchased from Ebuyer.Co.Uk I have arranged for the camera to be returned to Ebuyer and they will investigate further I have stated that I want a full refund so I can purchase one from Warehouse Express. Ebuyer have now removed this product from sale. On the attached photos some of the serial numbers have been removed for security reasons.

You were very unlucky here, lets hope that you get your full refund. This is one of the reasons why I always buy cameras, lens and expensive items from my local camera shop.

Thats rubbish form a company like that, no doubt duped themselves. Lucky for you, or not, you got the money back. Just goes to show that you can never be sure. Buying from reputable camera dealers looks like the way to go.

I was really tempted to take the camera apart and have a good look, but I don't want to give them any reason for not giving me a refund. If I get a reply from Nikon I will post.

Hi Paul; This may seem a little obvious but I would not send the camera or any other documents/paperwork by any ther means than at least recorded delivery and keep copies; I would also consider contacting trading standards if you do not get any satisfactory outcome from E-buyer; Under the 'Sale of Goods Act 1979 (as amended) all goods should should match their discription and be fit for the purpose or the purchaser can ask for a reprier or refund. In your case this should be a full refund as you have be mis-sold and mis-led by the description of the goods. If all else fails go to the Citizens Advice Bureau
