I had Canon 35mm film cameras for years, recently returned to photography and moved "up" to a Nikon. I would always go for a camera- or lens-manufacturers product. But a look at Dennyboy's work will show that the Sony he uses is pretty damned good, and digitals (as he reminded me) rely as much on their electronics as their traditional "camera" components.

HI Jules good advice on the 350 by Martin, Sony cameras have real good features and the live view on the 350 is acknowledged as the best in class. I have the DSLRA350 and the DSLR A700, the 700 is faster, higher spec e.t.c but doesnt have live view and relies more on the photographers knowledge of cameras and settings. The A350 or the 200 are entry level for people learning a DSLR for the first time. Of course other cameras are available Nikon and Canon make superb cameras as well. I am well chuffed with my Sony cameras though and as my friend Linn says take a look at my images! (the photographer has a lot to do with this!
) One word of advice i would seriously in hindsight buy the body only and no lenses and buy a 3rd party lens either Tamron or Sigma i feel the kit lenses sold with most cameras are to achieve a price point and you cant have a top class camera with a top class lens at the prices available today.e.g. my 70-300mm lens was £600 more than the camera is available at but its image quality is superb starting out i would go body only and a gen purpose lens say 28-75mm get used to my camera and build on it over a period of time.
